About Savitribai Phule Pune University
Founded in 1949, Savitribai Phule Pune University is based in Pune, one of India’s most populous cities, located to the east of Mumbai. It has a historic campus that goes back to the days of the British Raj - its main building is a Victorian architectural medley that was once the residence of the governors of Bombay, and is inspired by Prince Albert’s Osborne House on the Isle of Wight.
In terms of subjects, the university covers a broad range of disciplines, including Indian languages, physical sciences, humanities and education. It also boasts a broad range of research centres and schools, including the Centre for Philosophy and History of Science, a centre for network computing, and a department of Buddhist studies.
The university’s crest features elephants, horses, the historical capital of the Maratha empire, and its motto stresses the value of those who are creative and also add to the well-being of society.
There are a rich array of activities to develop students’ abilities outside their formal courses, including soft skills programmes aimed at students from rural areas who have lacked education opportunities in the past. They are trained in spoken English and effective communication skills, helping to improve their confidence.
The university also attracts a sizable number of international students, and there is an international centre on campus to look after their needs. The university also has its own radio station: Vidyavani 107.4FM, broadcasting interviews, information and exams, results and activities, as well as programmes on issues that affect young people.
